Treaty 8 First Nations Explore Constitution Development

In December 2009, over 24 representatives from Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta came together to explore the concept and process of constitution building.

The National Centre for First Nations Governance successfully delivered a three-day Introduction to Constitutions workshop. The focus of the workshop was to allow participants to gain a basic understanding of what constitutions are and why they are important. In addition, they learned about some of the challenges and solutions they may need to consider during the process.

The participants were provided with practical tools, resources and examples useful in constitution development. One participant shared, “It was my priority to be here and hearing what was being said. I am leaving feeling confident, positive, and the future looks good.”

The National Centre for First Nations Governance looks forward to supporting the future constitution development efforts of the Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta.
